Gato Azul, based in the beachtown of Fujisawa, Japan, is a small independent publishing house specializing in fine hand-crafted art books and booklets. Inspired by the Japanese Mingei Arts and Crafts Movement in 1930s, we focus on ordinary and utilitarian beauty of books so that they become non-consumerist, humble artistic objects. Our products principally deal with photography, engravings, poetry, travelogue, essays and other artistic and textual contents. Discovering the hidden tradition of popular cultural expressions, and innovating the artistic potentials of our everyday wisdom are two main objectives of our activity. Printed mainly on fine Washi paper and bound 100 % by hand in various styles such as French binding, Limp binding and Coptic binding, any of our books insists on its own material beauty and uniqueness which can be felt and enjoyed totally by our five senses.
